The Clone, Dublin City – May 2014

Recently I’ve been spending a lot of my time researching the tunnels underneath Dublin. Between old mines, wells, underground rivers and sewer systems there is supposed to be quite a bit of interest under the city and it’s suburbs. One of the more interesting tunnels I’ve come across so far in my research is “The Clone”, a tunnel containing a diverted river running underground for nearly a mile in length. Compared to the drains in the UK or to some in the city centre of Dublin this drain isn’t hugely interesting but I hope you enjoy the below photos nonetheless. All going well there’s much more to come from underneath Dublin!

  1. Wow, I was not aware that these could be accessed. I have heard stories of people unwittingly wandering into some of these tunnels only to be chased out by some rather nasty people. There are quite a few which date back a couple of hundred years and run all over the city, Masonic Lodge, Kildare House, Trinity College etc.

If ya ever want company exploring these I would love to tag along ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi Eddie, yeah, with a bit of stealth most of these can be accessed. The majority of the work involves finding them in the first place. These kind of tunnels are too small and flood too regularly for people to be hanging around in them permanently so they should be safe enough ๐Ÿ™‚ I’d be interested in hearing where that happened though! There are a good few legends and urban myths about tunnels throughout the city. Unfortunately most of them are just that. But all going well I’ll find out which ones exist and which ones don’t ๐Ÿ™‚

There’s a very good thread here which contains all sorts of legends about tunnels across Ireland which is a very good read if you’re into this sort of thing.

I usually do most of this stuff solo due to coming across plenty of dead ends and lots of time wasted but I’ll let you know if I’m planning a revisit to any of the better stuff I find and am inviting a couple of people along ๐Ÿ™‚
